The President of the Republic Nataša Pirc Musar has decided to propose Anton Rop as the candidate for the Governor of the Bank of Slovenia to the National Assembly, according to a statement from the President's office.

“I have proposed a candidate for the Governor of the Bank of Slovenia who has demonstrated the most professional, scientific, and leadership experience in the field of banking, management, and leading large systems, both in Slovenia and abroad, among all the applicants. He is the most suitable candidate to lead the Bank of Slovenia in the 2025–2031 term,” emphasized the President, who made the decision after reviewing the application documents, the Office's report, discussions with the leaders of all parliamentary groups and representatives of national communities, and thorough consideration. Since the beginning of her mandate, the President of the Republic has emphasized that high professionalism, leadership competencies, and personal integrity should be the leading criteria in selecting candidates for the highest positions in the country, according to a statement from her office.

The National Assembly now has 30 days to conduct a secret vote, and the candidate needs 46 parliamentary votes to be appointed. The current governor Boštjan Vasle's term expires on January 8 next year.

Seven candidates applied for the vacant position of governor, including the current governor Boštjan Vasle, former CEO of SID Bank Sibil Svilan, Miha Mihič from Delavska hranilnica, Vice Governor of the Bank of Slovenia Milan M. Cvikl, and State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance Saša Jazbec, who until recently enjoyed public support from Prime Minister Robert Golob.
